  • Three teens awarded trophies with Rossendale scout band

    Three teenage members of a scout group have been recognised for their dedication and hard work at a concert. The Rossendale Scout Group Senior Band members were awarded trophies at the group's Patrons' Concert, with four trophies being given out at the event. The concert was held at St Mary's CE Church, in Rawtenstall.

  • Whitworth Community High School students learn about Boccia

    Students at Whitworth Community High School have been learning a new sport and will be running a tournament for Year 6 pupils and Year 7 students.

     

    The 15 sports ambassadors at the school met with wheelchair racing champion Paralympian Nathan Maguire, who introduced them to the sport of Boccia, accessible indoor bowling.

  • High school adds two more sporting students to Hall of Fame

    Two sporting stars from Whitworth Community High School have been inducted onto the school’s Hall of Fame wall.

     

    When Ruby Aughey got the chance to go tubing being dragged through the water on a rope behind a boat she found she loved it and now she is a British National Waterski Champion at just 11-years-old.

     

    Know-no-fear Ruby, from Whitworth, took up the sport at nine and now the student from Whitworth Community High School wants to compete for Team GB on a world stage.

  • High school students raise over £2,000 for hospice

    A whole school glow dodgeball event was one of several fundraising activities which helped students raise more than £2,000 for Rossendale Hospice.

     

    Twelve Year 10 members on the Youth Enterprise team from Whitworth Community High School came up with a series of imaginative ideas to make sure that every member of the school - students, teachers and support staff - helped to raise funds.

  • Whitworth High boxer and footballer is runner-up in Rochdale Active Awards

    A teenage boxer from Whitworth Community High School, who is in training for a national title fight next year, was runner-up in Rochdale Borough Active Awards.

     

    More than 30 young people had been nominated for the Young Sports Achiever category and just three were selected as finalists at the awards held at Middleton Arena.

     

    Harrison, 13, was nominated for his commitment to boxing, he trains three times a week at Littleborough Boxing Club and also football, he helped his former team Pennine Juniors Black to win the treble – cup, league and premiership titles.

  • Whitworth Students take part in exclusive masterclass series

    A literacy journey from Taylor Swift to William Shakespeare was embarked on by able, gifted, and talented (AGT) students from Whitworth Community High School.

     

    Along with seven other schools, the students took part in the first of a series of exclusive masterclasses. They met Dr Scott Annett, senior tutor of studies in the faculty of English at Robinson College, Cambridge University, at nearby Rochdale Town Hall.

     

    The six Year 8 students also explored Chaucer and Dante in the two-hour session.

  • High school production of Grease is a sell out

    Many weeks of rehearsals, including Fridays until 8pm and three weekends, went into perfecting a slick production of Grease.

    Young performers from Whitworth Community High School staged the musical version of the much-loved Olivia Newton John and John Travolta classic film over three nights to packed audiences.

  • Teenage student heads to South Korea on guiding trip

    Ranger Guide Sarah Fallon is one of just 12 in the North West to be selected for a lifetime trip to South Korea.

     

    Sarah, 14, became a member of 1st Whitworth Guides after moving to Whitworth from Haslingden in 2020 and is now a Ranger. The Year 10 student at Whitworth Community High School was introduced to Girl Guiding by her grandma Christine Fallon after she moved to Whitworth.

  • Whitworth young reporters’ first sporting newsletter printed

    Young reporters have put together the first edition of The Whitworth Whistle to capture sporting news from Whitworth Community High School.

     

    Editor was Josh Dews, now in Year 11, along with lead photographer John Buckley and lead designer Kayden Garrity.

     

    A further team of three sub-editors and six journalists generated copy for the 12-page newsletter, which was printed in school and given to every student.
