Whitworth Community High School

Climbing Higher

Our students at Whitworth are challenged to find creative and unique solutions to problems. All students are encouraged to experiment and will have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials including acrylic paints, oil paints, print-making, photography, design and many others, whilst also developing their technical skills in drawing.

Art offers students the opportunity to work cooperatively, to be responsible, and to appreciate cultures and the world around them. We look and explore topics such as Mexican Day of the Dead, Native America right up to modern contemporary Arts and look at artists such as Sarah Graham, ROA and Kandinsky. During their time in Art they will gain a strong understanding of the genres and styles of many artists that underpin their work.

Studying Art helps develop students' critical skills and forces them to make judgements about their work whilst developing their self-discipline, autonomy and creativity.

“Art is that in which the hand, the head and the heart go together” – John Ruskin.

- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
