Students have access to a rich variety of extracurricular and enrichment activities designed to complement their academic learning and broaden their experiences.
Our programme includes opportunities across:
Activities take place at different points across the school week, including lunchtimes and after school, enabling as many students as possible to participate. The programme evolves throughout the year in response to student interests and the opportunities available.
Sport is an important part of our enrichment offer. Alongside recreational opportunities, many of our sporting clubs provide pathways into competitive fixtures and events. Students have opportunities to represent Whitworth Community High School in interschool and regional competitions, developing pride in their school as well as learning the importance of commitment, teamwork, fair play, resilience and respect. Competition is not limited to sport, however. Throughout the year, students encounter opportunities to participate, perform, create and compete across many areas of school life.
Our House system sits at the heart of our school community and provides every student with an additional sense of identity, belonging and teamwork. Every student belongs to one of our five houses:
Aquila | Draco | Orion | Pegasus | Ursa
Throughout the academic year, students earn points and compete for their House through our Inter-House Competition. The competition deliberately includes a diverse range of activities so that students with different talents and interests have opportunities to contribute. Events include activities such as dodgeball, cross-country, photography, geography quizzes and seasonal creative challenges, alongside other competitions introduced during the year.
Year-group successes are celebrated throughout the competition, culminating in the presentation of the title of Overall House Champion at the end of the academic year. The House system encourages students to participate in school life, support one another and recognise that everyone has something valuable to contribute.
Enrichment is not simply about taking part in an activity. The experiences students gain beyond the classroom makes an important contribution to their wider personal development.
Participation can help students develop:
It also enables students to develop friendships across different classes and year groups and strengthens their sense of connection and belonging to the Whitworth community. These are qualities that support students' academic success but are equally important as they progress into further education, employment and adult life.
We want Whitworth students to see themselves not simply as participants in our school community but as young people who can lead, contribute and make a difference. Students therefore have opportunities to take on positions of responsibility and leadership across school life. These experiences enable young people to develop their confidence, communication and organisational skills while contributing positively to the experiences of others.
Student voice also gives students opportunities to influence aspects of school life and helps us to continue developing our enrichment provision in response to their interests and experiences. We support nominated charities during the year such as Rossendale Hospice and Shelter.
We are committed to ensuring that students experience the world beyond their immediate surroundings. Educational visits, performances, competitions, cultural experiences and enrichment activities allow students to encounter new places, people, ideas and experiences. These opportunities support our wider commitment to developing students' cultural capital, raising aspirations and ensuring that every young person has access to experiences that may open doors to future interests, study and careers.
Enrichment therefore complements the taught curriculum: it helps students to make connections between what they learn in lessons and the wider world.
We want students to understand that sustained participation and commitment are achievements worth celebrating. In Years 7 and 8, students' involvement in enrichment is recognised through our Bronze, Silver and Gold Personal Development Awards.
These awards recognise students who actively engage with opportunities beyond the classroom and demonstrate an increasing commitment to their own wider development. Students are encouraged to build their participation over time, try activities from different areas and reflect on the skills and experiences they have gained.
At Whitworth Community High School, enrichment is for every student. We are committed to removing barriers to participation and ensuring that students, including those with SEND and those who may face disadvantage, are encouraged and supported to access opportunities beyond the classroom.
Our ambition is that every student leaves Whitworth able to look back on experiences that went beyond examination results: experiences through which they discovered an interest, represented their school, performed, competed, led others, overcame a challenge or simply had the confidence to try something new.
Enrichment is an essential part of what it means to be a student at Whitworth Community High School: creating opportunities, developing character, broadening horizons and enabling every student to keep Climbing Higher.
