From the moment students begin their Geography journey in Year 7 at WCHS, they are immersed in a wide variety of dynamic environments and topics from around the world. After all Geography is the study of “Everything; Everywhere; All of the time!” In Years 7 and 8 students will study the formation of our planet, the power and destruction of erupting volcanoes, the shaping of our world by the physical forces of water and ice. They will study the changing populations of our planet and the impacts humans are having on the world. Students will be constantly challenged to think about what is happening to our plant now and what this will mean for the future. As they move into KS4 they will be asked to think about the management strategies required on planet Earth to guarantee a better future for the planet.
In Y7 and Y8 students follow the National Curriculum studying Tectonic Hazards, Rivers and Flooding, Climate Change, Glaciation, Population Change, Global Development, Coasts, Geology and Ecosystems. In Y9, Y10 and Y11 students follow the AQA Geography GCSE which includes the topics of: Natural Hazards - Tectonic and Weather; Ecosystems, Tropical Rainforests and Hot Deserts; River and Coastal Landscapes in the UK; Urban Issues and Challenges; Changing Economic World; The Challenge of Resource Management and Geographical Issues and Fieldwork.
Provide a broad and balanced Geography education for all students at WCHS which builds on prior knowledge and skills.
Engage students in learning which is enjoyable, stimulating and relevant to students now and for the future management of the planet.
Provide students with an understanding of the application of the knowledge and skills they acquire and use in the Geography classroom into real world situations, e.g. Flood management in the UK in towns close to us such as Todmorden.
Provide students with an understanding of how the social, economic and environmental impacts of human activities and natural processes affect people in different countries and economic conditions in a variety of ways.
To help students develop the empathy levels, so that they understand that the world is made up of very different places both in terms of landscape and climate as well as economically and politically.
To promote the highest aspirations amongst students in Geography: to have dreams for the future and to work towards them in the present
To develop resilience within Geography lessons, self-belief and self-motivation in lessons and home learning
To enable every student to reach their full academic potential in Geographical skills, knowledge and understanding
To promote the social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of every student and to develop British values of democracy and the rule of law
