School ethos and values & Financial Benchmarking
Whitworth Community High School aims to equip all learners with the skills needed to succeed in a changing world. We aim to encourage all our students to achieve their potential through a culture of high expectations for everyone.
Learning is at the centre of all that we do and we aim to encourage a commitment to learning that is not based solely on the acquisition of knowledge but on the development of the skills, attributes and values needed to encourage life-long learning.
By life-long learning we mean:
- Successful Learners with enthusiasm and motivation for learning, able to link and apply new kinds of learning in new situations.
- Confident Individuals with respect for self and others, able to relate to others and manage themselves.
- Responsible Citizens with a commitment to participate responsibly in political, economic, social and cultural life. Learners who are able to understand and appreciate different beliefs, cultures and technological issues. Learners who have developed a sensitivity to the search for meaning and purpose in life and for values by which to live.
- Effective Contributors with resilience, able to solve problems and who have the ability to communicate in different ways and in different settings.
Life-long learning is for teachers too and Whitworth Community High School is committed to encouraging collaborative approaches to planning and development so that teachers can learn from each other. This involves the creating of a ‘safe’ environment where all learners, both staff and students, can openly discuss individual strengths and areas for improvement without feeling a sense of ‘failure’.
Our learning community should be characterised by a ‘can-do’ culture, where learners are offered a diverse range of activities and methods of learning to raise aspirations.
Engagement with a variety of opportunities local, national and global, should help to raise awareness of how our own learning community contributes to such developments.
Learners should be inspired to act as leaders through involvement in activities such as the school council, form representation, student mentor scheme, school prefect and the house system.
Healthy life-styles will be encouraged through our sporting facilities, a range of clubs and other extra curricular activities such as music, art and drama.
Finally, creativity, innovation, collaboration and courage should characterise our learning community. There should be a willingness to be different and creative in spite of all the daily demands and routines, within a clear culture of consistency in striving for the best for all our learners.
The school uses the Department for Education’s (DfE’s) Schools Financial Benchmarking website to find similar schools and then compares their per-pupil revenue and expenditure data against spending at Whitworth Community High School. This allows the school to identify areas where spending is comparatively high or low. It is important to also understand the information behind the data and to consider it in context.
The Headteacher and Business Manager work closely with Governors when considering financial decisions and the Leadership Team are also consulted when developing the systems and processes the school has in place to help ensure spending is efficient and results in the best outcomes for our pupils.
